the duel - the spectators
the dinner was interrupted by the frightful spectacle of a duel.
For the honour of his family and the good name of the Duchess de Rochefort, le Prince de Carpègne threw down the gauntlet to fight a duel with His Grace Honoré, le Duc de Rochefort in the woods of Versailles.
The cause of the duel is somewhat obscure, but informed sources at Court say it is paternity of the child Her Grace, the Duchesse de Rochefort is carrying.
The chosen weapons were pistols.
Even the fervent prayers of Mlle. Paquot could alter the course of events.
The Duchess of Rochefort seems resigned to let fate take its course!
