Suor Maria Sofia served as the gatekeeper at the Ospedale della Misericordia (Mercy). When more children began to be abandoned, they were often left on the doorstep at Mercy, and Suor Maria Sofia became ever alert to the slightest indication that a child might be left. She was always quick to respond.
I was deeply shocked to hear about the murder of Suor Maria Sofia.I remember her very fondly. It was she who comforted me when my mother died.
