It was the Age of Reason, and I was an intelligent thirteen-year-old girl who suspected that she had just become a monster. As I didnt put much stock in Satanic curses, I decided that there must be some rational, scientific explanation for what was happening to me. So I enlisted the aid of my old schoolteacher, Mr Smythe, to conduct some research on the subject. Of course, I couldnt simply tell him I was interested in lycanthropy, since the recent spate of killings might have suggested the word werewolf to anyone even mildly interested in occult phenomena. Instead, I asked him for books on daemonology. What he brought was the definitive work on the subject, Jean Bodins De la Dmonomanie des Sorciers (1580), which even suggested a cure burning at the stake.
