This is extremely interesting to me, because in my research, I found letters from either Charles X (M. d'Artois in 1773) or his entouragedescribinghis/their return toVersailles, finding it in decay, and empty, abandoned. I had imagine after all the time gone, the wooden panels (boiseries) that were in many of the rooms, would have fallen, but I did imagine the hall of mirrors, despite lacking its furnishings, would still have been glorious. The marbles, mirrorsand paintings, a little heavy on the dust side, but marvelous either way. That feeling or look, glorious but charming, yet haunting, Is represented to me in this picture.
