Africa III: The Elephants of Ethiopia
After a successful hunting trip in the interior, the party trekked North back towards the Gulf of Aden where the ship lay moored. Sunset bathed the landscape in a beautiful golden light. With nightfall just an hour or two away, we decided to make camp. We knew that the predators came out at night, for we can already hear the calls of lions and hyenas in the distance. We chose a nice fortified spot near a steep mountainside to ensure that we would not be surprised by unwanted company at our flank. First Mate Rodriguez and crackshot marksman "Hawkeye" Jones joined me as we did a final sweep of the area to make sure all was safe. As we rounded the corner, we saw a magnificent sight... a family of wild elephants enjoying themselves in the waters near a cascading waterfall. It was truly awe inspiring. Keeping a healthy and respectful distance, we all stopped in quiet reverence for the moment. The elephants rumbled and trumpeted amongst themselves loudly, most likely scaring away any would-be fauna set to do them harm. The sunset glistened off of their backs as they played, carefree, into dusk. The three of us watched in fascination for close to an hour before they finished their business and moved on into the darkness.
