Versailles - The becoming of a myth
Following 1678 Louis XIV of France began to assemble the princes of his realm and as well further ordinary nobles in Versailles establishing the former hunting lodge as the official royal resident and seat of government.
What was primarily conceived as a means of control by the king to watch over the troublesome elite of his country was soon to be regarded as privilege by its inhabitants. Living at Versailles permitted those who held an apartment - even if it only consisted of 2 rooms - permanent access to the palace and thus the king - one of the main concerns of every courtier.
An extraordinary number of courtiers was accommodated in the rooms of the chteau - as rightful neighbors to the king. It became a custom that would persist for more than a century - from Louis XIV who inaugurated the chteau until Louis XVI who was forced to leave it by his very own people in 1789.
