The contessas (Foscari and Loredan) were launguishing of boredom in the latters saloon when a messenger arrived with an invitiation to a night of playing faro.Seeing a chance to not die of ennui the two contessas were off as fast as a carriage could be procured.
Looking to visit a friend of theirs that had lodgings in the Villa Vesuviana,they were intercepted by a lady in red who announced herself as Lady Steward (an englishwoman) Soon the rest of the guest began to arrive,and Baroness (Diogenes Kuhr) took charge of the faro table and Signor Gandt greeted the arriving guests. The night looked very promising!
