Second Life A difference perception

Description:
My partner sent me this link. It's a not terribly subtle reminder that SL has gotten a lot better in so many ways. The creator of this vid described it as follows:"Using the latest graphic features in Second Life this video takes a short look at how the world can look and what is possible."Yeah, he's right (even if he did arguably go a bit over the top on the shininess). So much is possible and by golly it sure looks better than it did in 2007.So why are sims closing down or cutting back? Why is overall traffic flat? Where are people going instead?

There are two things I wish LL would do that I suspect would prevent people from cutting back or moving to "other places' like InWorldz, etc.

1) take some care with Mainland .. . . . the full region holdings of Bella Point (there may be others, but that's the one I see EVERYWHERE) that stack full region skyboxes 10-20 deep starting less than 50 meters above ground is a huge downer for people like me who invest time, money and energy to develop mainland. The Haven is bounded on two sides by these eyesores and no amount of derendering or building of mountains on my 1/2 sim+ can cope with that much visual pollution. It runs people off. It would be very nice if these sorts of in your face holdings could be limited to a single area...and let the rest of mainland be "for the little people" like me.

2) increase prims OR decrease tier

My two cents.

Thanks for sharing this video! I love to see more creators using materials, even if like you said, he exaggerated ( a lot! he should've played with the specular options a bit more) on the specular effect. Its such a good feature that adds so much quality to a build, I make sure to use it as much as I can on my creations.

About people leaving, sim closing, etc, I guess a lot has to do with how difficult it is to financially maintain a full sim. Maybe if they weren't so overpriced people would feel more encouraged to open sims and not feel so pressured for it to be crowded so fast (we could see more niche sims appearing too I think). I am hoping the new SL will bring back that hype and new influx of players SL used to have.

This was a wonderful video of what can be done in SL. I have long seen the potential. I do believe it is the cost that hampers growth in SL. We have all seen, excellent builds, lost due to cost. Sad to have seen so many peoples hard work gone because it is so expensive. Recently, I read on Jo Yardely's blog, Ebbe Linden mentioned in an interview with a German magazine, that tier were too high and they were looking at that. With the coming of SL2, changes are coming. Only mesh will be used in the new world. SL1 will be left to compete with Inworldz and OpenSims, both lower priced options. InWorldz and even OpenSim grids have made much progress. In OpenSims, they have HyperGrid. Instead of only teleporting inside your grid, you can teleport to any grid that is connected to the system.

With that said, the upcoming release of Oculus Rift and a possible facebook world, introduction of 3D entertainment, gaming, movies, tv, has the potential to expose Virtual Reality to a much larger segment of people and increase new explorers into Second Life.

It is my hope, that the price will become much more affordable, to allow all those ideas, buried in the creative minds of all the courts, to be built, shared and enjoyed by all.
