Managing a Historical RP Economy

General Discussion

Welcome back, Louis!  It's wonderful to see you returning to SL.

I have to congratulate both you & Jacon on your enhanced [ACS] system.  Clearly you are putting a lot of thought & effort into it.  It always helps to build on previous experience and, if I understand correctly, you are automating incentives thus making the role of the person(s) I called "Minister of Finance" less of a burden.

I hope that even though we are using different underlying systems we can find some common ground to encourage trade.  Perhaps with the Bank involved as a middleman?  It's definitely something to think about.

Merci beaucoup!

Managing a Historical RP Economy

Trade Makes Your RP Economy Sing!

According to Webster, trade is "the business of buying and selling or bartering commodities".   I have to keep reminding myself of this because I tend to relate RP trade to bartering when it can actually be much more sophisticated.  In fact, I believe that RP trade could be the glue that binds our Historical RP community together.

Trading within your own group will probably be a priority.  There's a reason why "buy local" is more than just a catchy slogan and you'll always be striving to keep your own economy stable but with the QH it just wasn't enough to keep our products circulating.

Trading with other Historical RP groups is my ultimate goal.  From a purely practical standpoint, the G&S system is so vast that any one group probably won't be able to do it all.  From a community standpoint I think it would be grand to shop at various Historical RP markets.  For one thing, it could be a lot less stressful than trying to learn & abide by all the different RP group rules.  I see the marketplace as a type of neutral zone where people can visit, meet, and mingle without having to remember the proper forms of address and behaviour.  I believe that this would be very appealing to many of us and it's one of the reasons that I make an effort with the QH Market hoping that if I build it they will come :)

Trading OOC will probably be a necessity for the foreseeable future.  The QH has had a presence at the G&S Co-op from the very beginning as it's currently the only way we can hope to move any quantity of our goods.   Honestly I'd rather be saving my L$ (which go towards stall rentals) and spending my RP coins in a historical setting.

Black Market the G&S game is also a form of trade that supplements the rest.  Not only is it a lot of fun to play but helps drive the economy as a whole by creating a lot of demand.

What think you?

Hatsuka:

The benefit of the Unity system seems to be that you can modify it as you like, adding recipes and ingredients. The materials you gather are stored in a pouch at your waist.

Thanks for the information!

The inventory sounds like the one in Skyrim.  I was always scrambling for ingredients or a healing potion just as some dragon was blasting me out of my boots :)

I do wish that G&S would give us more access to their APIs so that we could modify different items ourselves.  We had that ability in RPS and I made pretty good use of it.  I always wanted to drop some code into fancy chairs to that the upper nobility would lose energy for just sitting around doing nothing.

I also like that Unity has herbs.  G&S really needs to get into the whole healing aspect.  For now, I guess we can fake it by repackaging different wines & spirits into medicine bottles etc.

I was looking on the SLM to get an idea of the size of the actual user base and at first glance it seems smaller than G&S but I haven't delved too deeply into the group sizes etc.  I wonder what the impact was of Inworldz going under as they seemed to be operating there as well.

Site News: Construction & Clean Up 2019

Site News & Guidelines

TatianaDokuchic-LHVW Spring Cleaning 01.jpg

LHVW was long past due not only critical maintenance but a good cleaning & refresh.  I thought I would keep a bit of a journal here so that you know what's been done.  If anything goes wonky or your data suddenly disappears don't hesitate to yell so that I can fix it.

Software Upgrades: All site modules, including the Core module (the big mama of the system) are now up to date. You should see improved performance & functionality in many different areas.

Security Upgrade: We have a security certificate and we've switch over from http to https.  All http links should be automatically redirected.  We really don't have any secure data on this site (nor do we ever intend to) but it's nice that the browsers aren't flagging us as NOT SECURE any more.

New Banner: Abbondio has graciously given us permission to use his image Barks and Paddles as our new header.  I think it looks fabulous!  You'll have to clear your browser cache (images or files/data) for it to appear.

Modified Main Page: I've tweaked the formatting to freshen things up a bit.  I've also fixed some broken Forum links so that they're now actually pointing to the LHVW Forum again.

Increased Supporter Quota: I've increased the media quota for all site supporters as some members were hitting the maximum despite doing their do diligence and cleaning up old content.  If you were being blocked by the media quota you should be ok now.  If not contact me.

New Flavicon: I've been letting our flavicon default to Jamroom's (our server host) but I finally bit the bullet and created a custom one.  It's REALLY hard to make an image that looks good at every size from 250px x 250px down to 16px x 16px which is why I put this task off for so long.

User, Profile, Group Cleanup: A constant task but I'll be putting more emphasis on this in the weeks to come. If you have groups that you aren't using, please delete them.

Fingers crossed that all will go well.  So far so good!

Tat

I think it would be grand if members of the Queen's Hamlet could go shopping in the streets of Georgian London and perhaps the shopkeepers of Georgian London could get some of their fresh meat, produce and wine from the farms of the Queen's Hamlet :)

It's one of the reasons that I started Managing a Historical RP Economy in the hope that the historical RP communities could become better connected.  As has been mentioned before, the huge courts of the old days are gone but I believe that there's great potential for smaller scale RPGs that can interact with each other.

I found some information about Unity and it reminds me a bit of the original system we used in the Duché called RPS.  Perhaps Mansur will drop by and tell us more about it.  In any case, the Queen's Hamlet is committed to G&S.

Mansur has since implemented the Unity system for use in crafting and etc.

That's interesting!  I knew he was considering it but hadn't heard much about it.  How's it going?

Are you sure that was just a tuna??  O.O

Good point!  I have to confess that I'm not 100% certain.  It kept swimming up to the dock, staring me in the eye and showing me it's teeth.  Unfortunately I was too flustered to get a better picture, perhaps later today I will have better luck. :)

Managing a Historical RP Economy

General Discussion

So why not enforce one simple rule: You dress the part? You spend the part!

It's been my observation that an economy usually isn't part of the initial RPG rules but is added on piece-meal at some point after a pattern of behaviour has already been established.  Perhaps this makes it less palatable to the members already involved because they actually didn't sign up for it.  I really don't know but find it interesting to speculate.

If this is true, then starting a fresh RPG with an economic plan in place from the beginning is the easiest way to go.  I must say that the banking services currently being offered are a huge bonus for those just starting out.  Not to discourage those looking at retrofitting an economy as I believe the challenges are well worth the cost.

I couldn't agree more that 30L$ is a very small price to pay to get your foot in the door.  The QH started out with an economic plan which included scratching in the dirt for the initial capital.  It was a lot of fun but it was also a lot of work.  If I had to do it again, I'd pay 30L$ in a heart beat for starting capital.

Honestly these are exciting times not only for those just launching a new RPG but also for those veterans with economic visions! :)

One lobster, one seaweed and a 4 tuna.  I also started a up a tentative friendship with a HUGE tuna I'll call Earl.  Earl would come to the dock to get his head scratched, I kid you not!  I like to think he was being friendly but he was probably just taunting me.

Running total: 8
