If past history of online development holds true, the grass roots aesthetic that has made SL such a joy will not be a feature of the "new and improved" SL 2. Back in the day, before the internet, the text-based virtual communities were user-driven and fountainheads of creativity. In the earliest days of the Internet, content was user-driven and the work of "amateurs." Again, enormous creativity. That went by the boards as commerce took over and the platforms grew increasingly complex, driving out the pioneers and the "tinkerers." Passive users replaced them.

I suspect the same thing is happening here and will escalate. Look at Facebook as the model. For the masses. Period.

I don't like it, but that's what I forsee (and nothing would make be happier than to be wrong in my prediction.) As the advent of SL 2 draws near (IF LL can pull it off), the creative people and content creators who have made SL such a marvelous place will find new toys, new playgrounds where they can invent new realities without the "improvements" of top-down, corporate platforms. It is the people who create the magic. That's who I choose to follow.

Very true! SL may have huge numbers of registered accounts, but the percentage of people who stick with it is small due to learning curve, budgets, hardware issues. Not everybody can afford upgrading their systems constantly to take advantage of SL.

Broader access is the only way to hit critical mass of ACTIVE users.

It is the nature of technology to move forward, and that is both blessing and curse. For those who have significant amounts of REAL money tied up in inventory in SL the whole issue of backwards compatibility is an issue. If the "new" SL does not allow for export of inventory, etc., then that is a huge downside and ultimately a deal-breaker for a lot of people.

The other issue that needs to be addressed if the pie is to enlarge to reach "the masses" is the steep learning curve of SL and similar grids. The drop out rate is high simply because the majority of people will not (or cannot) stick with it long enough to become proficient. Hardware issues also impact the number of users/potential users: a lot of people cannot afford the investment in hardware to make use of SL. Ditto access...if you cannot get significent bandwidth, SL is torture.

For me, the one thing that cannot be lost without destroying my "vision" of SL is the people I have come to know. It is the people who create the content that matter...where they go, I go.
