Close in. In the days of Louis XIV, performances were held in the Cour de Marbre; before alterations were made, the three rooms on the front of the old chateau could be opened into each other and then the doors opened wide, thus forming a sort of stage backdrop. The Cour de Marbre itself being raised by 5 steps above the entrance court, the Royal Family and guests sat on seats arranged right there, and the Marble Court was used as the stage itself. This was how Moliere's Alceste and several of Lully and Charpentier's works received their premieres. Even after alterations were made to the interior rooms of the chateau vieux, performances continued to be held in the Cour de Marbre for some time.
