Yep,

You are reading it right! I am working on a FAQ (frequently asked questions) for Versaillesto make it easier for newcomers to get (correct) answers on their questions! Though, to do so I would like to know what kind of questions you had when you landed on the ground of Versailles or maybe questions you asked yourself a lot when you started roleplaying there!

I hope for many responds!

Friendly greetings,

MarieLouise Harcourt

-How do I get a title?

-How do I get a title?

-How do I get a title?

Alright, I am being facetious, but you would not believe - unless you have seriously RP'd there - the number of random (and not so random) people who will ask you that, the first or second thing they ask you. Not "What do you do here?" or "How do I join the RP?" or "I LOVE your dress!!!" (although one gets all of those, as well as much more interesting ones) but - well.

Actually, now that I think of it, a polite and politic response to "How do I get a title?" might be a good question to answer ... I am sure other questions will quickly come to mind and I'll add them. A very good idea!

Questions about history are already a main category! But point 2 & 3 are very good.

Next, explain, if there is a group of people, or RP going on, what to do. I see most people dont know that when they first come, and usually ends up being hurt :/

Yes, this is a good idea. More experienced players need to be alert to reaching out to visitors and newcomers, but they are not always there or, if in an intense bit of RP, able to conduct a discreet IM conversation with a questioner. It's always a good thing to reach out to someone who is obviously new or on the "outside" with a polite IM, once you have some experience and status (let's say to the point where you feel comfortable answering *most* questions - we *all* have questions at times!), asking if they are finding everything alright and offering to answer any questions. At the same time, one should be discreet and reticent in doing this, as many newcomers simply wish to observe and look around.

  • I would suggest a note card or ning post about which RP characters roles are available and which have been filled - Including the Royal Family.
  • I would also suggest a single note card dedicated to addressing members of the court - their titles, rank, faction or association in the court and how to address said character in socials circles.Tips for elegant etiquette go a long way in creating a FUN RP environment for everyone! ; )

Mrah the browser ate my reply to this :( . These are both EXCELLENT suggestions. Those of us who have been long at the court forget how long it took to learn all the niceties ... and in the Court of Versailles, or any part of French society from the upper middle class to the royal family, correct address was *essential* (and really still is - for example, when do you "tutoyer" - a concept that totally boggles the mind of an English-speaker since, in a sort of irony, the only Person we use the familiar form for is ... God! in old-fashioned-y speech - and I suspect most people actually think it's *more* formal ...)

Posting roles on the form ... now that's a thought ... hmmm ... hmmmmm ...

Yes, Elisabeth, getting started with role-playing in Versailles can be quite hard and confusing for newcomers. I'm trying to improve the help for newcomers, by for example this FAQ which will give correct answers on their questions.

I will also think of other ways to improve the help newcomers need :-)

Thanks for your contribution!

Suggestion one is a very good suggestion, especially because it's already there ;) There's a board at the entrance (which is now closed) that shows available roles. To put this in the FAQ would be a bit hard and misplace, I would think.

Suggestion two is a good suggestion, though it's already described in the etiquette, it will also be repeated in the FAQ.

Thanks for yourcontribution ;)

Here are my FAQs:

What parts of the palace am I allowed into? - Answering this would also be a good chance to bring in some points about history and dress etiquette
(I was once asked by a young demoiselle if I could, ahem, help her 'test out' the dauphine's bed - so it may be a good idea to underline rights of entry and what that entails!!)

Can I rent apartments? - Maybe a polite way to point people to rentals we do have?

Who built this place? -Could be a nice way to point people to the stores of the builders

What are good places to buy 18th century costume/furniture/jewellery? - again, a great way to point people to the stores of builders/designers who support Versailles (e.g. 18th Century Store and Nonna Hedges), as well as the Versailles Marketplace.

Where is this/that bit of the palace? - Maybe worth having a list of the rooms finished/available at that point in time. People sometimes ask about the Opera, chapel etc. and it would be good to have a list of rooms completed. This would also work with the Versailles key.
On a related note, it would be fab to have a map to offer to people to help them navigate.

Where is Paris? (I have been asked this THREE TIMES by THREE different people, can you believe!!!) - maybe worth saying we don't have an 18th century Paris (yet)

And just in case scurrilous rumours begin to surface, that demoiselle was not her Grace the Duchesse!
