Chateau de Versailles' contribution to SL9B:

~ Balls in the 17th/18th century ~

Masquerade balls had a long and standing tradition at the royal courts of Europe: The royal palace of Versailles made of course no exception to his rule. In fact, some of the balls and associated festivites held at Versailles would often last several days. One of the most memorable events was without question "Les Plaisirs de l'le enchante" held in 1664 with an incredible number of 600! Louis XIV had his protgs Lully and Molire perform concerts and plays solely written for this occasion. Given the overwhelming amount of work and funds that went into these kinds of events, balls came to be regarded as displays of glory, abundance and prestige - three relevant factors for monarchs of this period.

In the 17th/18th century masquerades balls were immensely popular as they offered courtiers and suppliants a rare occasion to be seen by the king. In all this the theme was of great importance: Both the performers, the miraculous setting and the courtiers dressed in the most extraordinary fashion contributed to the unique and often fanciful flair of every event.

~ Info ~
