Set in the 18 th century, [AoR] Age of Reason is a relaxing farming/crafting system where characters grow and develop according to personal pursuits. Often referred to as “active’ roleplay, the provision of a variety of activities coupled with a comprehensive economic model encourages community cooperation and participation so that a good time can be had by all!
How much of a time and money commitment is required?
[AoR] is meant to be relaxing so players have complete control over the amount of time spent using the system. Crops don’t wither and die, and neither do livestock. Some players perform their tasks several times a day while others only have time to participate on the weekends. It’s all good.
There is no cost to join or to continue playing.
How hard is it to remain happy & healthy?
Health and happiness are easy to come by! Though there have been several near-death experiences (players who left their poor, forgotten characters unattended over long periods of time), thankfully they were successfully revived and continue to thrive to this day.
For those that find daily survival a bit too easy, there’s an optional Household Management Challenge that will keep you on your toes.
How does character progression work?
Experience progression is time based, i.e. the amount of time you spend IC (In Character) and is tracked via the HUD & Meter
Skill progression is activity based with players advancing from Unskilled to Apprentice to Journeyman to Master. Each successive skill level unlocks new farming/crafting objects and speeds up the time needed to complete the activity.
Though this is a system with a historical theme, noble ranks/titles are not included in [AoR] character progression. A player may define their noble rank independent of the system.
How is the system moderated?
Player moderation is shared between community leaders with every player belonging to a specific community. [AoR] is focused on creating a collaborative environment within and between communities.
Can I farm/craft in any Second Life (SL) region or am I restricted to authorized regions?
Many of the garden patches, herbs, livestock, etc. can be purchased with [AoR] coins and used anywhere in SL. The same goes for a variety of crafters such as ovens, stoves, mills, etc.
Certain farming/crafting items, olive trees & the olive oil press for example, are limited to authorized regions and can be used by [AoR] players in those locations.
Can I buy/sell [AoR] items or services using Linden Dollars (L$)?
No, the use of L$ is strictly prohibited.
How comprehensive is the economic model?
The [AoR] economy is player-driven and includes roleplay coins, trade, and barter, all managed via the [AoR] HUD.
A central marketplace in the QH (Queen’s Hamle) is available for players to sell their wares via official personal vendors with coins going directly to the player’s account.
The [AoR] HUD allows for direct transfer of goods/coins from one player to another facilitating trade and barter.
“Fair” prices are built into the system as suggestions.
An NPC Merchant (her name is Myriam) picks up any slack allowing players to buy/sell directly. Myriam always takes a 10% cut for herself over and above fair pricing so she’s best avoided if possible.
What’s happening behind the scenes?
The [AoR] system uses a MySQL database which necessitates domain and web hosting. Database administration utilizes phpMyAdmin.
There’s a mix of LSL/PHP/MySQL with a bit of HTML thrown in for good measure.
Tat (TatianaDokuchic Varriale) is the database administrator, looking after all database design and maintenance as well as all custom coding and code maintenance.
Tat and Sere (Serenek Timeless) are partners in crime regarding concepts, logical design, direction, and all those nagging little details required to flesh out the system.
How long has [AoR] been up and running?
[AoR] was established in 2020, and the system has been running continuously ever since.
