Game of Thrones ~ A Song of Ice and Fire

Book Lovers

Daenerys is No Hero

If you think Daenerys is a hero, you haven’t been paying attention. She might be the biggest villain on Game of Thrones and we don’t even know it. (Well, we might after the Loot train battle.)

An interesting article from Jamie Adair giving us a different perspective with references to conquerors through the ages including Alexander the Great & Henry VII.

---  SPOILERS ---

I'm really enjoying this season so far. Seems like I've been waiting forever for Arya to get payback against the Freys and I'm loving all the Stark reunions.

---

@tiamat-windstorm-von-hirvi I haven't read his other works, I'll have to give them a try.  I can understand how you could become "weary of all the guts".  I doggedly continued because I wanted resolution - something I'm just getting now with the TV series.

QH: What are you producing? What do you require?

QH Discussions

The idea behind the "QH Manager" is to generate demand.  The manager will buy only with coins and tries to spread sales between QH Members that are selling out of vendors in the QH Market.  This works to a certain extend but is limited by what can actually be resold which fluctuates wildly.

I believe that most of the cooking staples are available for coins in the QH Market.  In my experience they don't sell all that quickly so we started selling in bulk as well though that is usually for L$.  Perhaps bulk cooking staples sold for coins would be an idea?

Milk is now tricky to sell because of the expiry date.  I have lots of it and would be happy to sell in bulk for coins if there is a demand.

There seems to be a demand for:

  • All variety of tools made by the blacksmith - it's actually hard to keep these in stock
  • Iron ingots, scrap metal, scrap wood, nails
  • Boxes (especially D, F & G)
  • Bulk Grain (50 or 100)
  • Kalana 1. 4. 5
  • Rence 3
  • Salt

Not sure about baskets & jars as most people seem to be making their own.  What do others think?

We've been trying to encourage "Fresh" Weekends so that people don't have to process their items.  I'm still looking for more ideas on that.  The two carts at the front of the market are designated for fresh items and I would be happy to send out notices when people have fresh goods to sell.

Elisabeth mentioned the DFS system and I'm all for selling that out of the QH Market as well.  I'm looking forward to hearing more about it.

Thanks for starting this conversation, Una.  I'm looking forward to hearing from other members :)

Updated: Added more items in demand as I though of them.

Stephen King: The Writer's Voice

Book Lovers

It's scary to think how far Stephen King has managed to insinuate his work into my life.  The Shining was the first of his books that I read and I still can't visit the Chateau Montebello without imagining the Overlook Hotel.

A few of his characters have taken up residence with me as "old friends" and so I re-read their stories to get back in touch with them.  I'm always delighted when they make cameos, however brief, in other tales giving me some sense of what they've been up to since I saw them last.

That's not to say I appreciate all of his work (apparently he doesn't either) but among my favourites are It , The Stand , and The Dark Tower series.  I'll admit that I was one of those "constant readers" that was scared he was actually going to die before finishing with The Dark Tower and as it turns out that wasn't just paranoia as he almost didn't make it.

This summer a number of TV and movie adaptations are rolling out and I'm excited to see how they fair.  So far I haven't been impressed with previous versions of The Shining (hated Jack Nicholson in it), The Stand (TV mini-series) or It (TV mini-series) but I still have hope because of The Green Mile , Shawshank Redemption , Stand By Me and Haven (TV).

How about you?  Do you have any old SK favourites?  Are you looking forward to the new releases?

Stephen King: The Writer's Voice

Stephen King: The Writer's Voice

Across a long and prolific career, Stephen King’s works can be shown to evolve alongside the author. This special feature discusses how a writer’s voice in their work is tied to the writer’s personal experience and explores the risk of literary influence by examining specific entries in King’s canon...

Seems that I've had Stephen King on the brain lately so I was delighted to come across this article.  TV & movie-wise, it looks to be a summer filled with adaptations of his books so I thought his work would make for an interesting discussion.

Finding and Defeating Texture Lag?

Off Topic

Two things I keep meaning to mention.

One - IMHO not all 1024 textures are evil.  Whenever I can I merge 4 x 512s into one 1024 I do it under the assumption that they take the same amount of space with fewer server calls.

Two - Full perm mesh creators have a habit of making every texture for every face (max 8) on their meshes a 1024x1024 - ugh - that's a lot of large textures on one mesh unit.  Add in textures for materials and things really get crazy.  I end up redoing all those textures/faces, combining when I can and downsizing if at all possible.  It takes me ages but well worth it.

Game of Thrones ~ A Song of Ice and Fire

Book Lovers

I started reading the books before I knew it was going to be turned into a TV series.  I have to say that I enjoyed them BUT GRRM really could have used a lot more editing.  Now that the TV timeline has overtaken the books I don't know if I will actually read the last two? installments.  On the other hand, I'm not sure if GRRM will actually live to finish them.  I get the feeling that he ended up biting off more than he can chew.

His penchant for killing off main characters got a little old for me and I became one of those people that was threatening to quit if my remaining favourites (Arya & Jon) were snuffed.  I'll see how I feel when the time comes.

To get the ball rolling on the TV side here's a recap of Seasons 1-6 since it's been awhile:

Game of Thrones ~ A Song of Ice and Fire

Book Lovers

Game of Thrones, the HBO Series based on G.R.R, Martin's book series A Song of Ice and Fire, is heading into its final two (shortened) seasons.  Love it or hate it, you have to admit the scope of both the television series and the novels is impressive.

Now that things are started to wind down a bit I thought I'd start a discussion where we could talk about all things GoT related, spoilers included.

One of my favourite GoT references is the website  History Behind the Game of Thrones  edited by Jamie Adair as it's a great way to explore history and I encourage you to check it out.
