Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell  ~ What Fantastic Footnotes!

At the dawn of the nineteenth century, two very different magicians emerge to change England's history. In the year 1806, with the Napoleonic Wars raging on land and sea, most people believe magic to be long dead in England-until the reclusive Mr Norrell reveals his powers, and becomes a celebrity overnight.

Soon, another practicing magician comes forth: the young, handsome, and daring Jonathan Strange. He becomes Norrell's student, and they join forces in the war against France. But Strange is increasingly drawn to the wildest, most perilous forms of magic, straining his partnership with Norrell, and putting at risk everything else he holds dear

I guess that I'm a bit late to the world of Strange & Norrell as it was published back in 2004 but better late than never.  I was a bit lost the first few chapters until I realized that this novel is best approached as an alternative history and the footnotes are essential in drawing you into that world.  I'm usually a footnote skipper so I had to backtrack a bit to get into the groove.

Strange & Norrell barely scratches the surface of Susanna Clarke's imaginings and I was sorry when the book ended though I understand another may follow focusing on some of the minor characters.  There's also The Ladies of Grace Adieu which I intend to read for my next Faerie fix and I've just started watching the BBC Series.

Lots of magic going on here!

Have you read it or seen the series?  What did you think?

Varriale Designs - Glen Cairn Cottage

Buildings & Other Structures

I had the pleasure of visiting this cottage a few times while it was under construction and then after it was finished.  Skye's not kidding when she says there are a lot of amenities in a small footprint!

The gardens & conservatory are fabulous as always and I'm in love with the kitchen & staircases :)

Westworld a New HBO Series SPOILERS

Off Topic

Waiting until 2018 for the next installment is a real drag.  As they say, this first season was just the prelude to the real story and I'm eager to get into it.

I thought we might see Maeve escape the park and therefore give us a glimpse of the outside world.  Alas it wasn't to be.  Who knows what lurks out there ...

Yes @leopoldina, I loved the "mini freak out" too.  You just can't tell who's who.

I wouldn't be surprised at all to find out the real Ford is still pulling the strings behind the scenes.  Seems like something he'd do.

Dang William!  You were the only human that I liked.  Maybe he'll find his road to redemption in upcoming years.  Perhaps in Samurai Land?

A most satisfying debut season.  Looking forward to more.  In the meantime I might re-watch from the beginning to see how things developed now that I know more :)

General Discussion

Right now I'm splurging on Christmas decorations & bringing winter to Provence.  I have this feeling like I lost weight and now have more room in my clothes ;)
