Saint Petersburg Exclusive Epée!

Apparel

People in the service of the army and imperial court would have carried special swords known in France as epées. I decided to make a Saint Petersburg in SL exclusive item that is based on a real 1790s Russian sword with engraved writing possibly belonging to a Russian colonel.

This one, in particular, has "За Услуги Родине" ("For Services to the Motherland") engraved, along with 3 diamonds enclosed into the handle.

If you want to support our RP project in a way that can be displayed, you can purchase this epée for only 50L$!

What Are You Reading? v3

Book Lovers

I've personally started reading the newly published English translation of a very famous story/myth of Kiều  (the Penguin Classics one translated it as Song of Kiều ) by Nguyễn Du.

It has a very big place in Vietnamese literature (and history) and talks of the life of Kiều  and how her resilience, and literary talent empowered her to. The original novel/plot itself is Chinese (Jīn Yún Qiáo Zhuàn) and is set in China (it's loosely based on real people like the Jiajing Emperor from Ming dynasty and the sea lord Xu Hai). But its importance is that the author redid it into a very lyrical poem about a beautiful, smart and strong woman. It touches upon a lot of social themes, especially how difficult it was for women (so it is quite feminist compared to the original novel).

I like this translation because

(1) it's in English - my Vietnamese reading skills are bad, I can read them relatively right but to comprehend what I've read - that's another matter Wink;

and

2) Timothy Allen has a detailed introduction to both naming systems for Chinese and Vietnamese, and also comparative overview of history of the turmoil at the end of Ming and Lê dynasties.

I'm really glad that Vietnamese literature is starting to be rediscovered by foreign readers so if you want to check it out!

P.S. My great-grandmothers' generation would have known this >3000 line poem by heart apparently, although it might be partially because there wasn't much else to read at the time lol

Historical RP/Sim : How to get new people and retain existing

General Discussion

Pamus Bing:

As a foot note I went to visit Saint Petersburg after reading the link to the web page. My avatar is a standard height for SL, they have a height restriction to the height of a child. That immediately excludes me from going any further especially the comments about standard avatars been possible trolls. I think this reiterates my point.

Hey! Thanks for visiting the sim. I think the cap may have been a bit misleading. For visitors, there are no restrictions. However, in consideration of the interior, furniture and just for a realistic consistency relative to each others' height (in this case I mean RP-ers, not all SL users), we had to introduce the 2m cap. We've run into issues where in photos the IC spirit can easily break when a gentleman is over 2m10, whilst a lady is 1m70, or the other way around.

I am not sure what you mean by "the height of a child". Being 2m both in SL and RL is tall for anyone, could you perhaps elaborate? I have found in my many years, that the whole height issue seems to arise from the odd camera angle that is put as default in all viewers (though of course I'm not as experienced as most of the contributors to this thread ^^;;). After tweaking however, I've since found it really easy to keep to around 1m80 for my IC character and about 1m90 for my OOC looks...

Again, apologies you felt excluded, we in no way meant it to be viewed as such >.<

Conte Luca Vendramin:

I have visited Grafinya Shuvalova's palace in the capital and it is absolutely wondrous and so affordable.Well done, Your Majesty.

Ah yes, it is a much more "customised" work since it's a palace in the capital, but it's pretty not going to lie hehe
