El Estanque, un diamante cuadrado de color acerado, segn algunos contemporneos, ms grande que un huevo de paloma, fue regalado por Felipe II a Isabel de Valois y cost 8000 coronas. La princesa francesa lo luci a su entrada en Toledo. Por otro lado, la perla la Peregrina, con un peso de 58 quilates, le cost a este mismo rey 9000 ducados. Esta perla con forma de pera fue considerada nica en el mundo y recibi alabanzas en su poca.
El Estanque iba engastado en el joyel propiamente dicho, que fue realizado en oro de 20 quilates por los Reynalte, plateros del rey, mientras que la Peregrina colgaba del joyel, de modo que ambas piedras pudieran lucirse de forma independiente si as se deseaba.
De Felipe II pas a Isabel Clara Eugenia y de sta a Felipe III. La joya sali de Espaa en 1808 con Jos Bonaparte y a partir de entonces el Estanque y la Perla tienen vidas separadas.
