A mutual time period for rp

I realize that the initial response to this suggestion will be to dismiss it--for various good reasons (especially since several of the courts have invested much effort in their rp histories).

With due respect to the truly amazing, innovative, and gorgeous creations in the various nations and city states (both complete and in progress), there is one slightly confusing area that is more obvious to those of us who are attempting to be ambassadors reporting from one court with its time period to the other.

All of the late 18th century sims are set in the 1770's, and that is fine for most purposes: all of the social, noble, stylistic, and political issues are close enough in time to avoid discrepancies. Most. But not all as you move from the beginning of the decade to the end--especially if the events across that big stretch of water are taken into account and a new, significant nation rose and and burst into being.

So, if you were (to take one example) an ambassador reporting to the republic of Venezia about events in Georgian England in sl, you would be going back and forth between 1779 and 1775--four years that few would fail to agree were not only significant for those two countries but also eventually would affect all of Europe in one way or the other.

So, granting that there might be immediate resistance to this thought (but taking into account the excellent cooperation and growth of these sims due to the hard work, talent, and expense of their creators), might it not be helpful in the long run to find a mutually acceptable YEAR: perhaps one year beyond the highest so nobody's history is affected, 1780.

If not, perhaps an agreement to keep the time period less exact might work: 1770-1780.

I have not put in the time and effort that those who have created and maintained these areas have, so this is just a thought for discussion.

You are correct when you say that community leaders & members have put in a lot of time and effort with regard to this subject as well as many others. If there is one thing each court shares in common, it's our passion for the "times & places" we inhabit in SL :))You will notice that the blurbs about the Duch de Coeur usually start with the same phrase: The Duch de Coeur is a friendly and romantic land inspired by France during The Age of Enlightenment (17th-19th centuries). After a lot of thought & consideration, we have "narrowed down" our time period to be between 1637 and 1789. In actual fact what happened was that we started out as baroque community with Louis XIV & kept expanding the timeframe until it encompassed Louis XVI. We are pre-revolution as the saying goes. This gives us a lot of flexibility, provides for a rich & inclusive role-play environment and allows us to interact seamlessly with other courts as they "tweak" their own time periods.I personally haven't noticed any down side to this. It is an opportunity to broaden the scope of my personal historical knowledge and requires me to be flexible when dealing with different people which really is worth the effort. I think that being stuck in one year would be the equivalent of the movie "Ground Hog Day" where you are bound to keep repeating the same events in a continual loop (over & over & over again) but hey, that's probably a perspective gained after spending more than 2 RL years here. :))
