Time for a Change
[Background: A month after his forced wedding of shame his former spouse being sent to the Bastile, the Marquis escaped the eyes and ever gossiping court to the sanctuary of his country estate. Madame Lenothre, the marquis's boyhood governess, and always attendant, watches in pain, as she see's him turn to drinking, ashamed of what he has come too.]
Madame Lenothre walks over to him and leans down, gently stroking his hair "I thought I would find you here Nico." The marquis turned to look up at his old friend, she seemed to be the last form of any respect he had left. As he puts down his glass he questions "How did you find me here?" She pulled blanked from what seemed to be a basked she had carried, and wrapped it around his shoulders, ignoring the odors of rum, that he smelt of. "I've watched you be born, and I watched you grown, something's even an old person won't forget...when you were troubled as a child, you would always come to hide here in the chapel..your parents didn't use it much, but you did, even if it was to hide". The Marquis, pulls the blanket over his shoulders, remaining silent for a little. He couldn't hold back the mess he had become, and flared out his arm, smashing the bottle and glass against the chapel wall. As he closes his eyes, a silvery tear made its way down his cheek, as he chokes to say "I don't know what I've become". The Old woman, through great pains, made her way down to sit next to him, holding him in her arms "it is wise to turn a misfortune into a fortune". Now on the verge of sobbing, he mutters a shamble of words "How can I show my face, sold my respect for 400,000 sous, married the most shameful woman at court, to cover another man's child, and then watched her be dragged away in front of the entire court to be sent to the Bastille". She broke him mid ramble "You did what you had to do Nico, you did what you did for the royal family ,you were prepared to put your own respect on the line for your duty and loyalty, surely if the court won't see that, at least you can enjoy the respect of the royal family". Again he looks up to her, as he wipes away the tears "are you mad woman? are you saying go back to court?". She looked down, being ever patient and gentle "I am saying, the only way to make this wrong a write, is that you prove your side. You have the extra wealth now, find a way to stabilize your place at court...you have the respect of a prince, do not let him down, you do not need to please the court, no one can please the entire court. All you need to do is please the royals, which you have always done. Those who gossip of you, only wish to break you. Now stop the drinking Nico, and prepare to return to court, go, I know you will be fine" The Marquis hugs her tightly as the night fades on.
