In honour of Raphael' s birthday (March 28 or April 6, 1483) I'm posting this image of his painting of Saint Catherine of Alexandria . I have a small print of this that I acquired from the Canadian National Gallery years ago mostly because I'm in love with the colours. Even in a modern reproduction they're fabulous. I'd absolutely love to see the real painting.
According to the description Catherine "is looking upward in ecstasy and leaning on a wheel - an allusion to the breaking wheel (or Catherine wheel) of her martyrdom" but I prefer to pretend that she's Fortuna with her Wheel of Fortune .
