You can see the inner roof courtyard with cupola; interestingly enough, the attic story was reserved for nobles - servants slept in the dependencies, or on pull-out beds concealed during the day in the boiserie.
Maybe they liked to party in the attic and to annoy servants further by making extra noise, like how "youngsters" jump on dat dance floor whilst the elderly grumble downstairs trying to sleep. And I am SURE the attic wasn't particularly good at sound isolation too. :D
Heheh Sofia - the "elders downstairs" would have been Louis XV and his close relatives (royals were accorded the honor of the first floor, while Madame Pompadour had her suite on the ground floor) - I laughed freely at the mental image of His Most Christian Majesty banging on the ceiling with the end of a broom whilst chandeliers tinkled wildly.
