I'm delighted to announce the addition of Sweet Bread to our food list.  Used in combination with an updated version of Butter it will deliver Sweet Bread with Butter slices for you to enjoy.

To butter your bread:

  • rez a pot of Butter and a loaf of Sweet Bread
  • touch the Butter and select the COMBINE menu option
  • touch the Sweet Bread and select the COMBINE menu option
  • receive your slice of Sweet Bread with Butter

If you forget and select COMBINE from the bread you can still go to the butter select COMBINE then the bread select COMBINE.  If you're really confused, the bread and butter will timeout and reset in 30 seconds.

You can also receive plain slices of Sweet Bread by choosing the GET menu option.

Sweet Bread can now be baked in the oven:

  • level 2 recipe
  • requires Sweet Bread Dough

Sweet Bread Dough can now be purchase from Myriam and I'll be working on getting everything together so that it can be crafted.

SELLING HARVESTERS & CRAFTERS

Unfortunately the SELL feature for the version 1.0 Harvesters & Crafters is a tad unstable so I've disabled it.  If you would like to sell those items you can do so by contacting Rousseau who would be glad to help you out.

Version 1.1 Harvesters & Crafters are now being sold with a SELL that should be stable.

No need to upgrade as all the other functionality is the same.

Many thanks to everyone for their feedback and helping to debug.  Keep that bug spray at the ready!

Una Lunaqat:

What level can cook carrot soup?

Carrots are used in chicken soup (level 2) but there is no recipe for carrot soup.  I didn't know if there was a need for more than the current four soups (potato, tomato, chicken & onion) plus the two broths (chicken & beef).

AoR Skill Levels & Skill Points

AoR Resources

Every crafter & harvester is associated with a specific skill, for example the oven is associated with the Baker skill, the stove with the Cook skill, the grain field with the Grain farmer skill etc.

Skill Levels are as follows:

  • Level 1 (Unskilled) - 10 skill points
  • Level 2 (Apprentice) - 100 skill points
  • Level 3 (Journeyman) - 300 skill points
  • Level 4 (Master)

Skill levels are used to determine the items players may produce.  An unskilled cook may make a simple pot of potato soup (complexity level 1), an apprentice cook has the option of cooking both potato soup and tomato soup (complexity level 2) and a journeyman cook may make three different soups, potato, tomato and onion (complexity level 3).

Skill levels are used to determine the time it takes to craft/harvest an item.  Baking a loaf of bread (complexity level 1) will take an unskilled baker 120 seconds, an apprentice baker 90 seconds, a journeyman baker 60 seconds and a master baker 30 seconds.  Cooking a pot of onion soup (complexity level 3) will take a journeyman cook 120 seconds and a master cook 90 seconds.

Skill points are earned each time an item is successfully crafter/grown. The number of skill points earned is equal to the complexity level of the item produced.  If someone cooks potato soup (complexity level 1) they earn one skill point.  Likewise if someone cooks tomato soup (complexity level 2) they earn two skill points.

While it is easy to move from an unskilled worker to an apprentice it gets progressively harder to move to journeyman and then master.  It is hoped that players enjoy a gradual journey through the various skills with their associated skill levels keeping in mind that historically it took years for tradespeople to progress with many never reaching the master level.

If the current progression proves to be too easy during this beta testing the skill points required for leveling up may be further adjusted.

18th century Butter-making - home churns and utensils

Historical Research

Butter-making - home churns and utensils

Lots of information here outlining the process from milk, to cream, to butter.  I was particularly interested in the barrel churn, an 18th century innovation:

A barrel churn is so late an invention, that the uses of it are known but in few counties in England. Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire justly claim the first practice of this most serviceable dairy utensil, that every year comes more and more into fashion, for its being easily and quickly clean'd, as well as its being work'd with much facility and least waste of cream, and expeditiously producing the sweetest butter.
William Ellis,   The country housewife's family companion , 1750

SKILL LEVEL UPDATE

Skill Level 2 (Apprentice) and Skill Level 3 (Journeyman) have been updated by increasing the number of skill points needed to advance.  Skill Level 1 (Unskilled) remains the same.

This change only affects those few players that had already reached Skill Level 3 or above.  In those cases, their levels have been rebased while still retaining all of the skill points earned to date.

Hi Una.

It denotes the number of different ingredients.  Though it's a clunky format, because it's the one used in the database, it's the easiest one for me to use right now.  I've added a small note in the Ingredient column at your suggestion.

NEW STOVE

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving!  Seems like the perfect time to announce additions to our culinary catalog.

A stove is now available with three soup recipes (potato, tomato, onion) plus beef broth.  See AoR Recipes for all the details.

All the necessary ingredients are available from Myriam and I'll now start working on the vegetable patches and other harvesters/crafters required to complete the supply chains.

After eating cartloads or bread, a bowl of potato soup should make for a nice change!

[AoR] Economy

AoR Resources

Economy

The AoR economic model enhances enjoyment of the system by having enough nuance to make it interesting while avoiding the frustration of over complication.  Given this, prices will remain stable and are not affected by fluctuations related to real-time supply & demand.

Rather than starting from scratch, a daunting challenge to say the least, the AoR economic model makes use of the methodology, including the Master Price List, found in Grain Into Gold: A Fantasy World Economy . This “simple and sane supplement” is based on considerable research “including research into historical, medieval life. The averages and generalities of this book are based on a combination of historical fact, historic opinion, and modern practices”.  It’s as close to an “off the shelf” 18th century economic model as could be hoped for and it will be refined to suit our world as AoR progresses.

General AoR Economic Concepts are as follows:

  • Based on Coins
    • Easy transfer of coins from one User Coin Bag to another User Coin Bag

  • Conversion Rates:
    • 10 copper coins (cc) = 1 silver coin (sc)
    • 10 silver coins = I gold coin (gc)
    • 100 copper coins = 1 gold coin

  • Trade (barter) is also facilitated by the system
    • Easy transfer of goods from one User Basket (a personal inventory) to another User Basket without needing to have actual objects cluttering SL Inventory

  • Taxes
    • Paid on food & goods that are Harvested
    • Paid in goods (not coins)
    • Automatically paid to Community

  • Merchants (NPC)
    • Intended to bridge any gaps where items may not be available from other players.  As such, the prices have been deliberately set low for the sale price and high for the purchase price.
    • Sell goods (10% premium)
    • Buy goods (10% tax)
    • Provides the Master Price List

  • Master Price List:
    • Seeded from the one provided in Grain into Gold
    • The price of crafted products not specified in Grain to Gold takes profit into consideration and is calculated as Price = (total price of all ingredients) x 2
    • Sellers are free to determine pricing of their own products
      • Branded items, for example, may come at a premium
