Courtiers, and the ancient problem of bad behavior...

Communty News & Events

'But if in court so just a man there be

(In court a just man, yet unknown to me)

Who does his needful flattery direct,

Not to oppose and ruin, but to protect...

Who does his arts and policies apply

To raise his country, not his family...

If such there be, grant me this at least:

Man differs more from man, than man from beast."

John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester (1 April 1647 26 July 1680) was an English Libertine , a friend of King Charles II , and the writer of much satirical and bawdy poetry .

He was the toast of the Restoration court and a patron of the arts. He married an heiress, Elizabeth Malet , and had many mistresses, including the actress Elizabeth Barry .

Our battle here in SL is as old as time!

Moments in the memory...

General Discussion

Merci, Monsieur le Comte, for the reminiscences and wonderful photographs. I share your enthusiasm for the courts, especially since I spent years in SL before I discovered them. They're vastly more fun and interesting than the other regions and sims I've seen. I sincerely hope, though, that we can create more stability and keep the courts we have now from self-destructing. I too felt since childhood that I'd lived before in royal courts, and often I have a sense of 'deja vu' when role playing.Yours truly,Sir River

Non-authentic Music

General Discussion

After speaking to one of the sim creators, I discovered that there was an error made which was quickly corrected. Also, copyright issues often rear their ugly head as they relate to costs of providing music.

Non-authentic Music

General Discussion

Dear Creators and Friends of the Royal Courts,

There were two grand balls this weekend, but I was very disappointed to hear music that was completely anachronistic to the 18th Century time period. I'm not a stickler for authenticity, and don't mind bending the rules a bit, but it's unpleasant and jarring to hear songs from Phantom of the Opera, or the waltzes of Johann Strauss, to use just two examples. Strauss is a century off. Phantom is an entertaining musical, so please don't get me wrong, but it's two hundred years off.. The fun of being in the SL courts comes from the theatrical illusion of time travel. We go to great lengths dressing and acting the roles we play, and it's ruined by stark inaccuracy. This hasn't been a problem before, that I can recall. What has changed? Please consider the music carefully.
Sincerely,

Sir River

M'Lady Penelope,You are quite right. The Courts of SL are threatened with bad behavior, and will not grow if it persists. Nobody of quality will want to join in.There was a code of behavior in those splendid centuries, known in part as 'noblesse oblige'; meaning that aristocrats had a 'noble obligation' to treat all people, regardless of station, with generosity, respect, and dignity. It has been said a million times, in our age and most others, that the 'nouveau riche' - the newly risen - are the most insufferable snobs; the rudest and most obnoxious tyrants. Such are many in the courts of SL. We must instruct and educate them, and, if necessary, shun them if they act so destructively.

10 Reasons to Stop Apologizing for Your Online Life

General Discussion

Very true, and well spoken. Additionally, when we have the freedom to be anyone we want and do almost anything we wish to do, we're making a very important statement about who we truly are at heart. We reveal our true selves to ourselves.
