Chapter IV "The First Meeting"

The next day Comtesse Jeanne Adelaide just woke up from her rest after the Lunch , Jean was already prepared with her "Medicine". That strange brew had a strong smell after spiced Rum, but Grandmere swore on its healthy effect. "I have allowed myself to pray for you Madame, while you were resting...." said the little Moor with a big smile.

"What a precious little Angel you are...." answered the Comtesse and reached out for the little tray with Petitfours to reward her little servant.

"Oh my Medicine, very good!.........You are right Jean..." said the Comtesse thoughtfull"...today we will need all our faith. That person from court......what was his name again?.... will be here within an hour...""Belgrave,....Madame......His name is Belgrave" She caressed his cheek, while Jean was eating his Petitfour. After a short while the Comtesse rose and went down the stairs , crossed the hall into the Garden. "Be careful...the Sun, Madame!"shouted the little Moor, grabbed a parasol and went after his Mistress.

The air was filled with the sweet fargrance of the roses when the two reached the garden Terrace "What a beautiful day, Madame.....we should thank our dear Lord afterwards!" "How thoughtful my little Darling!" Grandmere stopped and opened her little golden candy box "OH, merci Madame", Jean gleamed.

"I do hope the day stays that beautiful....." said the Comtesse as she spotted her Granddaughter with the young gentleman. Monsieur de Belgrave and Duchesse Alessandra were chatting on the terrace and seemed to await the Comtesse and the little servant.

Grandmere immediately perceived the strong perfume of the Monsieur. Even Jean noticed it "A bit too much..." he whispered and gave the Comtesse a lace handkerchief. The comtesse held it to her mouth and nose " I recognize the Odor from the abyss....my dear....you can trust me" she anwered quietly.

"Ahhhh...There you are!" said Alessandra as she saw her Grandmother and Jean. The Comtesse entered the terrace a bit hesitantly.

"May I introduce...." Alessandra smiled brightly.

Chapter III "Firm The Faith"

Alice came crying into the Salon, curtsied in front of the young Duchesse an began to speak "I am terribly sorry your grace, but what shall I do.....?" "What has happened Alice?" asked the Duchesse a bit worried. "This little rascal has opened my Apron bow four times...." she moaned"... and Mme la Grandmere always rebukes me about my sloppy look!"" Do not worry Alice..." the Duchesse smiled" I already noticed that on the stairs one time....I will talk to Mme la Comtesse....my Grandmother should not tolerate such behaviour..."

870_blogs.png?width=750

A few minutes later Grandmere and Jean came down the stairs. Alessandra awaited them already downstairs "Chere Grandmere.....could I talk to you for a moment ?....I will not tolerate the behaviour of your little servant Jean....I do not want him to play pranks with my chambermaid Alice!" She looked strict at Jean and said " You do know what I am talking about Jean.....the apron bow, don 't you ?"

"My dear Child, that is absolutely incredible..." indignanted Mme la Grandmere" ...MY little precious would never play pranks...Would you Jean ?""Oh Mme la Comtesse...I do hope you do not believe such a thing!" with wide opened and innocent eyes he looked at Grandmere. She helped him to sit on a little table and petted his head. "Certainly I do not believe such a thing, my little angel!" said the Grandmother , opened a little golden box and stuck some candy in the little Moors mouth."Merci bien , Madame la Comtesse, I will pray for you. I thank our dear Lord that he showed me the mercy for bringing me to you!" "Awe...There you see Alessandra, that little angel could not lie!"

The young Duchesse smiled wryly....it had no use to talk with Grandmere about that. The little boy seemed to have wraped her grandmother around a finger. It was obvious...allone the precious clothing she dressed him with....She always knew her Grandmother as a bit stingy.

"May I go a bit in the garden , Mme la Comtesse?" "Oh mon Dieu! You will get dirty my precious! We will have a look later ...." "As you wish dear Mme...."answered the little Moor with a big smile. Duchesse Alessandra rolled her eyes.

871_blogs.png?width=750

"But Alessandra...it occured to me that I am in a impious Household!" determined the Grandmother "I do hope that also your servants will follow us to the praying hour!" Little Jean noded. "I would love to join you for praying...aswell as Alice....but I have to talk to you in another serious matter.....I have met a very fine Gentleman.... He is also introduced at court!"

"hmmmm Is it so?" Mme la Grandmere raised an eyebrow " My little Granddaughter gets wise?....The Marriage is a sacred state for a man and woman ..... What Court is he introduced to?"

"At the court of Versailles...."

"Oh mon Dieu!..." gasps the grandmother " Versailles.....the anteroom of Hell....The snakepit !!"Jean made the sign of the cross.

"I have already invited him Grandmere.....he will be here tomorrow...I think you will like him !" said the young Duchesse with a firm voice.

"We will see...ma chere.....we will see!" Jean noded "Indeed , Mme la Comtesse....indeed"

He read to me the whole journey from the bible, didnt you Jean ?Oui Madame, am I allowed to read again later ? Certainly my precious ! said the old Lady with a smile and patted his cheek. He was the servant of my dear Friend, the Abbess of the Couvent des Rcollets in Metz......may she rest in peace.... Her last will was, that he shall belong to my household....But let us go inside , I want to change and refresh myself. The little Moor tugged at Grandmeres sleeveShouldn t we go and pray and thank for the good journey, Madame? You are absolutely right, Jean...Please show us the chapel here at your chateau Alessandra! The young Duchesse seemed a bit irritated and embarrased Oh Grandmere, I have to admitt.... there is no Chapel at the chateau...I am terribly sorry! The old Lady raised an eyebrow and Jean shaked his head in disbelieve. hmmm... I see said Grandmere with a firm voice We need to change a lot of things here....fortunately I have my prie-dieu with me. Jean will find a suitable place for it later..... Avec plaisir , Madame la Grandmere

The Chambermaid Alice showed the noble guests to their rooms. Alessandra noticed that the little Moor , with a big grin, rewinded Alices apron strings at the stairs.Such a little Rascal! the Duchesse thoughtThat can be a very interesting Visit.....oh oh

Chapter I

The Letter

800_blogs.png

The young Duchesse Alessandra de Fiorentino-Conti felt a bit uncomfortable after she has read the letter. Not, that she did not like her Grandmother, the Comtesse Jeanne Adelaide de Conti, but she remebered the former attempts of her Grandmother to marry her with a suitable husband again.

Grandmere Jeanne Adelaide was the head of the family, essentialy it was nothing to say against a remarriage. On the other hand she knew how orthodox and old-fashioned her Grandmother was. Alessandra read the letter again. Maybe her new little Companion has made her grandmother somewhat milder, she thought. But there was another reason, why she was worried.

Alessandra has met recently a very charming and elegant young Gentleman while riding. Monsieur Armand de Belgrave has made a great impression on the young Duchesse. He associates at the Court of Versailles, he was sophisticated and knew how to make the most beautiful compliments. It was no wonder, that the young Duchesse fell in love head over heels, after the tragic death of her husband she lived a bit isolated on her Estate in Lourmarin.

But what would Grandmere say ? For the old Lady , Versailles was the anteroom to hell. Today Alessandra wanted to meet the Monsieur .... here at the park of Lourmarin. She wanted to tell him about the letter of her Grandmother

801_blogs.png

In the afternoon the Duchesse and Monsieur de Belgrave walked through the gardens of Lourmarin. He brought her a bouquet of her favourite flowers. Oh how attentive you are , Monsieur...she whispered. He took an elegant bow. A beautiful woman deserves this attention he answered. After that Alessandra mentioned the letter of her Grandmother.

I have to let her reside here....she is the head of the family and one day she will leave me a considerable fortune.... she tried to explain. She did not notice the wide smile on Monsieur de Belgraves face, as she mentioned the considerable fortune.

A gardener of the Duchesse crosses their path, carrieing a big basket with leaves. He bowed and walks on. Immediately Monsieur de Belgrave pressed his perfumed handkerchief under his nose and kept hold on the Balustrade.Oh ...Monsieur what happened? Alessandra asked.

Madame....je suis desol.....it is an old family suffering. The glance on working people makes me feel uncomfortable. We Aristorats have a much stronger sensibility as the common people.... How horrible Monsieur, I am so terribly sorry about this. Would it comfort you, if I ask you to join me for dinner tonight here at Lourmarin? Willingly Monsieur de Belgrave accepted the invitation.
