Managing a Historical RP Economy

General Discussion

Finally had a moment to read the replies about the Antiquity system; I was already intrigued by it and hope to learn more about it. Perhaps it's time to call in on the long-standing invitations from Don Jacon and Lord Trevellion for a tour and a visit. Certainly the set-up and modification option for period items and necessities are interesting. I remain always willing to think along and search for options to achieve more communication and trade within the community. A general consensus is nice, but not always possible when different systems are used; however, cross-overs an parallel use should be possible. Especially when, as we have determined by now, the systems are easily accessible at low to no cost at all.

On Produce & Trade (from notes on a G&S Economy)

General Discussion

In my notes on setting up an economical structure, I found a list of all that is produced within G&S. All of which I placed into a categorical listing of commodities, and processed and produced goods. The idea behind it was to give more insight in what is available within G&S, as it is often broader than people realize at first. And also to outline what a product is considered to be within the chains of produce, thus providing a certain basic allotment to the various optional professions. The first category would almost be the sole produce by the farms, a miller, and fishermen. The secondary would be the miner's part. And the third category would be for the artisans/shopkeepers, such as cooks/bakers, carpenters, blacksmiths, vintners, etc. The subsequent part was to settle values, with the eventual aim for standardized prices to all base products. Such a price could then be used for calculations along the further chains of produce. All through which a better and more realistic economical balance would arise.

Trade would step in on all levels, but the main idea was that the producers agricultural and mineral would sell their own first level produce, making it available to the producers artisanal. Or to consumers directly. The merchants would step into each lacuna; for instance with the staple good Oil - which is an impossible product for any realistic historical estate (as it comes from squeezing out dinos). In Magritte I imported salt from a Croatian saltmine, iron from Alto-Adige, and rice from the plains of Lombardia.

AGRICULTURAL

I - Staple goods - Grain, Rice, Bamboo (rence), Potatoes (suls), Wood, Wool, Cocoa beans, Sugar cane, Tea leaves, Coffee beans (blackwine), Fresh water (often bulked in barrels), and Oil.
II - Primary produce 1 (base and processed goods) - Eggs, Fruits (grapes and kalana), Honey, Wax candles (vela), Animal skins, Paper (papyrus)
III - Primary produce 2 (perishable) - Meats (beef (bosk), goat (verr), and pork (tarsk), Tomatoes, Milk, Seafood (fish, salmon, eel, tuna, lobster, oyster). NB: Under this category, for the sake of logic I also put Poultry (vulo), even though it is not perishable.
IV - Primary produce 3 (milled goods) - Flour (grain), Pastry flour (rence), Sugar, Cocoa Powder.

MINERAL

I - Raw materials - Iron, Copper, Gold, Salt
II - Forged materials (ingots) - Iron, Steel, Bronze, and Gold

ARTISANAL

I - Victuals - Processed meats (sausages, bacon), Dairy Products (cream, butter, cheese), all Baked and Cooked foods, Confectionery (jam, syrup), Wine, Distilled (brandy, liquor, rum, paga, sake, mead), Beers (regular and rence), Other Drinks (fresh water, tea, coffee, sweetened),
II - Packaging - Crates, Barrels, Buckets, Baskets, Pottery
III - Constructional - Planks, Scrap Metal, Hoops, Nails, Docks, Signs,
IV - Metalwork - Tools (regular and master), Weaponry (swords, bows, shields), Lighting (lamps, torches, lampposts)
V - Furniture - Chairs (2) and Stools (2), Tables

Managing a Historical RP Economy

General Discussion

"In a perfect RP everyone would participate in the economy by buying, producing/serving, and selling.  It's been my experience (gained over the past 11 years of analysing numerous Historical RP groups) that there's usually a huge imbalance between supply and demand.  People really like to craft and sell.  No one likes to buy.  Crafters build up an inventory of goods until they reach a point where further production is pointless. People lose interest, the economy dies and everyone goes back to having monthly tea parties."

Hear, hear!

I agree wholeheartedly. But I would even take it a step further. In a roleplaying-environment, to make a economical structure work (be it just a bakery, a farm, or a full blown town with businesses) you need to have it enforced from the top. We all accept (or refuse) the rules of a RPG when we consider joining it. In my observation too the root of the problem is always in the end of the chain: consuming. So why not enforce one simple rule: You dress the part? You spend the part! You're a noble - a high ranking one even? - grand, but then it comes with obligations. You hire local people for jobs, you spend in shops, you pay taxes for the stuff people used to pay for - in the 17th and 18th century there were indeed wealth taxes: You paid for the coffee, chocolate and tea you used in your household, the amount of chimneys and windows your residence had, the number of staff and horses. It only works when the management of the RPG itself states clearly 'this is our vision, and so it will be done'.

Besides, entering a set-up system of roleplay-economy is always cheap in comparison to other stuff people spend their L$ on to get started. Without any problem they pay hundreds (thousands even) of L$ on gowns, wigs, accessories, but spending a small amount to get yourself immersed in the actual community and enrich your rp by that would be too much? Not to blow our own horn as bankers, but I think we got a very fair rate of exchange in this G&S-currency. Something we have always said from the moment we decided to set up the bank: We will always offer a better exchange than the standard, and by that surely a better one than the free market. I usually say: 10,000 lira/livres/piastra should enough to get started and explore. According to our bank's latest rates (which is about the easiest and quickest way to get hold of it) gaining this starting capital would require the simple investment of about 30L$... I wouldn't call that over the top...

QH Seafood Market

QH Resources & Guides

As you said: An interesting ploy!
I'll be sure to look into it. Also, this has made me review the Bank's institution to expand our activities and include more of our community. It will be published in another post.

Baroque shoes for mesh body

General Discussion

Hello Elisabeth, I am far from an expert on shoes, but I believe my mother has some in her shop at Bay of Naples, Sorrentina.

In general things have not been updated much yet; due to our community being so small these days. Apart from dresses and suits, we have great designers on that with Maison de Montgelas.

Trade Network?

General Discussion

Una, the OOC-tag is mostly meant for visitors that wish to remain modern visitors. The tag is a solution that has been used by many rpgs for many years, but is never enforced when we're dealing with people from the same great community of the courts/18th century. Magritte gets a -lot- of visitors, some follow these rules respectfully, but a larger group just ignores and barges in - to those we point out the tag.

Magritte has some changes ahead in the coming time. But rest assured that the Barons are and will be more than welcoming to any IC-visitor.

I like the idea of market days, especially now that we're expanding with produce and really covering the full range. The new option to customize products like beer, brandy, liquors, etc. makes this even more interesting.

QH Brag About Your "Firsts" v2

QH Discussions

Similar story here, albeit not for the bacon. A week or so ago I saved a couple of dwarf pigs (tarsks) from a literal death market. Four males and a female, now named Rossalina (red), Bianco (white), Screziato (mottled) Pancetto and Prosciutto (both pink). Now we have the first pink male baby, which my sister named Peppone. Getting the hang of it, I bought very cheaply (3L) two mottled females Screziata and Bruna, the latter turned out pregnant, so now we have a female baby: Porchetta.

Never thought we keep some livestock either. But these are somehow cute. We have brought them to a farming couple in Magritte, where they are in a pen with plenty food and water. We might just continue this. The larger ones are a step too far, the giants are literally too huge...

QH Roles Worth Exploring

QH Discussions

It's good to see the Queen's Hamlet revived again and looking so promising too!

The house of Rezzonico has over the past months entered the G&S system, influenced by her rp-presence at Magritte (which is fully G&S now). We are focusing on three elements that fit our story as a Venetian family: vintning, trade (commodities), and banking (rp-coins); we remain based on Sorrentina, even though the islands is not (yet?) making the switch. We'd love to interact with the QH, as I'm sure Magritte will too. I believe that with these three entities we can make G&S an interesting way of interaction for our, now small community.
