Buongiorno, Don Myron!
Thank you for the compliments. We have done our best to make these suit the various purposes of rp, competitive fencing, and simply looking good (which is, in and of itself, not an unworthy goal).
By the way, I should also mention that a substantial portion of the proceeds from the sale of these weapons goes directly to help support the continued operation of the Melioria sim.
Yours,
Don Aldo
With the opening of our new Sword Cutlers' shop near the harbor in Melioria, we, the Swordsmiths of the island, are pleased to begin offering our first releases of authentic 18th century edged Weapons for purchase by Gentlemen of Fashionable Tastes and Good Judgement.
"A Sword cutler's shop" from Diderot's Encyclopedia, which served as the inspiration and guide for the swordsmith's shop on Melioria
The pieces offered for sale at present include firstly, an unscripted Fencing Foil of the general pattern developed primarily in Northern Italy and Germany and commonly employed from around 1720 to 1800. When this form of foil is used in the various German principalities, they are sometimes caller "parisers" as they are designed for fighting in the french fashion, stabbing with the point rather than slicing with the edge. The version offered comes with a leather "blossom" attached for safety of your sparring partner, which may be removed as our foil is mod/copy. These are very suitable for use in the fencing game called En Garde ( and if you are not familiar with the means of utilizing non-standard weapons for En Garde, we will be happy to explain the process). The purchase price of this foil is only 50 L.

Secondly, we are very pleased to inform the fashionable gentlemen of the various baroque sims that we are offering a beautifully scripted S mallsword of the pattern that was most commonly worn by European gentlemen from about 1750 to 1790. You shall no longer be compelled to wear your grandfather's bulky and out-of-date rapier: instead you may choose from one of our authentic smallswords with different finished hilts, including a sword with blackened mountings suitable for mourning and funerals (currently on sale at the 18th century content makers fair); a silver-mounted version which may function nicely as a court sword or gentleman's town sword; and a bronze hilted sword suitable either as a gentleman's town sword, or for use in the field or on parade by military officers, particularly those in naval service, staff, or infantry. Each sword comes with a scabbard, and is scripted with animations to draw and sheath, and various combat movements. Once drawn, the stance used is taken from actual 18th century fencing instruction manuals.
The silver and bronze swords will be available for purchase in the sword cutler's shop in Melioria starting this saturday, May 19th (other versions shall be forthcoming). The price will be a mere 249 L. A sample of the bronze version may be seen there now, set in the swordsmith's vise:
For those who would like a short history of the smallsword and some illustrations showing actual 18th century examples, we refer you to this article:

We look forward to providing you with a proper and authentic sword or swords for all occasions. If you so desire, we will be happy to demonstrate the various animations and/or usage in En Garde for you prior to purchase.
Your humble and obedient servants,
Ernst Osterham

Thank you, Sophia.
En Garde is a great game and the creators deserve a lot of credit for having put it together. That said, it has always been a continual frustration for me and others that the game elements really fit best in a modern context. Yes, you can change the texture on the mat, but the rest of it has a very 21st century look. We were inspired by what had been done with the pistes at Renaissance island, where they not only changed the mat texture, they also camouflaged the metal posts and signs with wood framing. For us, it was a simple process to then make it fit more appropriately into the historical environment of the Fortezza Vecchia. Yes, it's still not perfect, but it certainly is much less of a culture clash than before.
By the way, we have also made an authentic 18th century-style northern Italian/German foil that is unscripted but adjusted for wear with En Garde animations, and which can be used in the game if you wear an En Garde epee as a second HUD (along with your regular En Garde HUD). The game has become a lot more fun for me with all these improvements. Now if we could just make the little orange step counter gizmos invisible, we'd be in really good shape.
The Societ per la Promozione dell'Arte della Spada di Melioria is pleased to announce that they have recently refurbished the fencing piste located in la Fortezza Vecchia, by the main piazza in the village. All are welcome to come make use of this elegant and imposing facility when visiting the island.
As one may see in the above image, which was kindly provided courtesy of Donna Candace Ducatillon, the refurbished piste is suitable for use in the competitive practice of swordsmanship commonly called "En garde" -- in this view, the Professore Aldo Stern and Signore Myron Verne are cheerfully engaged in the game. In the time since this image was created, a few more minor refinements have been added. If you are a lady or gentleman interested in the fine art of swordsmanship, we hope you will take advantage of this improved facility.
Signore e Signori,
We are pleased to announce that the management of the Coffee House in the Village of Melioria near the old Harbor has been taken on by a respectable scottish Lady, Signora Aphrodite MacBain. Beginning on the evening of April 26, the Coffee House will be open on a regular basis for the purposes of purveying the finest Coffees and Teas, and fostering the best sort of intellectual discourse (IC in the context of the year 1780) between thoughtful Ladies and Gentlemen of various stations in Life.
From that point forward until further notice, the regular hours for the Coffee House to be open for interaction will be every Thursday evening from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM SLT and every Saturday from 11:00 AM to Noon SLT.
The Coffee House is a respectable establishment modeled after the best aspects of the popular British Coffee Houses, but with a singular and key difference: It shall be organized and operated in the manner of the Coffee Houses in Genoa, Venezia, Vienna and certain other German states, so that both Gentlemen and Ladies are welcome to enter and partake of both the Coffees and light Meals which are offered, as well as to participate in the conversation.
Please also be aware that newspapers from many major Cities of Europe are brought to Melioria with great regularity by the variety of Ships which call at the Island for trade and to transport our visitors. Signora MacBain has made arrangements with the Masters of certain of these Vessels to obtain a supply of reasonably current periodicals for the enlightenment and edification of those who visit the Coffee House.
Donna Candace,
Thank you for your coverage our little event. It was a fine gathering of exceptionally gracious and thoughtful individuals. And as usual, your images are exquisite.
Il Professore
That is very kind of you say, Donna Leary. I am gratified you enjoyed the discussion.
