"Brown Bess" Musket sale and fundraiser

Marketplace Archive ** CLOSED **

For a limited time, individuals who wish to own the most accurately designed and scripted representation of an 18th century flintlock military musket to be found in Second Life may visit the orientation room on the entry/exhibit platform at Rocca Sorrentina to purchase a copy the long-awaited Kiergarten/Osterham version of the Brown Bess.

The musket itself was made by master SL gun builder Jasper Kiergarten with an authentic look and beautiful detailing. It has been scripted by Ernst Ostherham with a HUD that permits the user to carry the weapon either "at the trail" or casually over the shoulder; when ready to fire, the user is posed at the ready with the musket in the position proscribed by the British 18th century manual of arms (and used by many other armies as well); firing may be done from standing, knelling or prone position; and the reloading process includes all the actual steps needed to load a military flintlock including tearing the cartridge with you teeth, priming the pan, loading the powder and ball, withdrawing the ramrod, ramming down the powder and ball, replacing the ramrod, and cocking the weapon. On firing, flash happens in both the pan and the muzzle. The musket may be carried slung and have the bayonet either fixed or unfixed. It is also suitable for use with drill and parade HUDs.

Price for this remarkable weapon is 595 Lindens, and during this fundraising period, a significant portion of the income from sales will be donated to the Missouri Humanities Council as thanks for the Council's support of Rocca Sorrentina, which would not have been preserved and maintained with their assistance.

Feel free to ask a member of the Guardia di Rocca Sorrentina for a demonstration.

Adieu, ma maison à Versailles

Communty News & Events

Phantom and Anne, If I may, I would like to put the stage persona aside and say to both of you, not as the Professore, but as a fellow long-time SL roleplayer and occasional builder, that I have great sympathy for your feelings in this situation and respect for how you are approaching it. Setting aside all concerns of who did what and why something happened, the fact is that everything has a life span. Nothing lasts forever, including people, stories, relationships, places and communities. We know that someday it will be time for us to pull the plug on Rocca Sorrentina. Someday, the Lindens will undoubtedly shut down SL. We hope neither of these things are going to happen for a while, but eventually, they will.

And when things end, "you can't go home again." Despite our wishes to the contrary, we have to move forward, not backward, and I think that is what both of you are doing in your own ways, and it is something I very much respect. I also would like to say that I particularly respect the way that both of you can say, "things weren't perfect" and you learned things as you went, and that plans were underway to address some of those issues.

At the same time, there were moments of "magic" that happened -- and those are moments that should be treasured. But those things are fleeting. Moments of magic come and go. But in the end, when a moment or series of moments have passed, we need to do other things. We treasure what happened, we learn from it, and go on.

Phantom, I think your post here was honest and incredibly thoughtful. Again, I offer you my respect for that and hope someday, our paths may cross and we might interact in our stage personas, whatever they might be at that time. Perhaps something positive will take place and there will be new moments to remember fondly -- or perhaps it will just be a pleasant way of passing some time. Either is fine with me.

And Anne, I really understand your sadness and needing to step back from things for a while -- though I would not be surprised if at some point you decided that it would be fun to try your hand at building again, not for any one else, but just for yourself and your own satisfaction. I remember a number of years ago, I fellow I know who had built a reproduction WWI airplane, crashed his plane on takeoff at an air show. He was badly hurt, and although he recovered, he swore that he would never rebuild the plane and would never fly again. And yes, about a year later he was starting to rebuild the aircraft, and about five years later, I saw him flying over a WWI living history event. Things get in your blood, and they don't necessarily leave you, even when bad stuff happens.

That said, I hope that when you do start bashing prims and textures around again, you will be doing it for yourself, not for others. If others get to see the results and get some enjoyment out of them, that's well and good. But please do it for your own pleasure and enlightenment.

Relief Aid Extended

Communty News & Events

Donna Tatiana,

It is gratifying to hear that by the Grace of God, no one was badly hurt in this epic disaster. It is nothing short of a miracle. We have every confidence that the industrious and clever people of Languedoc Coeur will recover and rebuild quickly, but if respite is required, our offer of assistance and temporary housing stands. We also will be holding a prayer service with the good father Helendale on this Thursday at 4:00 PM SLT in the Church of San Valentino on Rocca Sorrentina, both to pray for the relief of the suffering of Languedoc, but also to give thanks for the blessing that no one no one was seriously injured.

Hopefully some of your people will be able to attend.

With all good wishes for the future,

your most obedient servant,

Don Aldo Stern

Ah yes, chocolate. Personally, it has always been my view that it is chocolate, along with beer and onion rings, which prove to us that, yes, God does in fact exist, and also that She loves us.
