Some questions posed by a beginner

Hello!

Wow, I think I'm making so many mistakes now (is it allowed to post this topic in this category here, for example^^), so that's why I'm writing to you.

To begin, I'm Jasmin (another mistake of mine - I filled my real first name into the box of the User Name^^) and I just love 18th century - as most of you do, I suppose.
So of course, I'm interested in the role play, but I have some questions.
It's important to know that I'm not only new at the royal court but also in the whole game, Second Life. That's why I'm completly overstrained with nearly everything. I don't know how anything functions, so please be patient with me... ;)

At first, I wonder where I can find the rules/conditions to join the roleplay. And I need to know if joining costs real money (-> does joining cost money in any case, or do I just have to pay when I want to use "premium" functions?).
In fact, these where my two main questions. Secondly, I'd like to ask if there's a map for the palace of Versailles. Although I've already visited the real palace, it was very difficult for me to navigate there^^

That was all for now :)
I hope I didn't do too many mistakes. If I did, then I'm really, really sorry for that! I don't mean to break any rules, I'm just completly new here!

Thanks :)

Jasmin

Hi there

If you are looking for information about using this Royal Courts site, Guidelines is a good place to start. The Getting Started category may also have helpful information for you.

If you would like to change the name that you are using here on Royal Courts: Go to the First Box in the Right Hand Column - Settings - Profile tab - Full Name and make the change there (make sure to save the information).

I hope that you enjoy your time here and in SL!

I do like that quote, but I'll just add, when I was starting out, about ... eeeks four years ago ... I spent a few *months* just hanging back and observing several courts, standing politely in the background at events etc. I learned a very great deal in that time and then I felt I was able to make choices and act. This is not the way for everyone, but especially if you are brand new to SL I recommend observing, there are many conventions and behaviors that people in SL, and the SL courts, take for granted, that are very good to learn.

This is all excellent advice, and I will only add to it, that your SL will be helped extremely by going to a place like New Citizens (NCI) and learning some of the key things about SL, first of all very basic building and manipulating prims. These types of classes are free and widely available. SL is a "user-created" world (as opposed to having everything ready-made by game designers, like most games), and if you know how this world works you are far ahead of others in a short time. Spending your first few months learning a bit is an investment in a much more exciting and enjoyable long-term SL.

Our Versailles is laid out to scale just like the one IRL, some of the inner rooms and lesser stairs are missing. For a plan I refer you to the fascinating berdom's blog , basically you want the "aile centrale". As you likely know the "rez de chaussee" is the ground floor, the "premier etage" is the first floor or piano nobile, and the "second etage" is the second floor, we only have two of Mme du Barry's rooms there though.

Welcome to SL and welcome to the courts, I hope you find much enjoyment and interest here!

Welcome Jasmin, I think you've already learned your first important lesson and that is how kind and helpful people can be in Ning and RC, that is if they choose to be. There are so many different personalities here that the standing back and observing before you make your close alliances will serve you well in the long run. Happily most people here won't disappoint you. Have fun and enjoy yourself! Good Luck. ( ;

Hello!

It's very kind of you that you all want to help me and gave me some advice! Thanks to everyone for the replies!

I have to say that everything you wrote here was very encouraging for me. I'll surely try out the tips you posted here, e.g. observing the courts. Wow, and to be honest: I didn't even know there are more courts in SL than Versailles - really, I thought this forum is just about Versailles^^ But it's good to know there are more courts, so I can, as you already told me, choose between the courts.

Ok, then there's one more question - just to be sure that I understood what you said: Joining the court of Versailles definitely costs real money, whether you're playing as a fictional or historical character, whether you belong to thenobles or not, right?

Thanks again for your replies! I feel very well and safe here now :) I'll surely visit this forum more often :)

All I wil say is every one of us was a newcomer to both sl and the courts at one time and all made mistakes. We were all helped along the way by kindly "veterans"--for the most part the people in the courts are very kind and helpful. Don't worry about making mistakes (I have been here over two years and still make them daily!). Just enjoy the beauty and excitement of sl and the courts.
