I felt the same about Death Comes to Pemberley.  I thought perhaps it was just a case of my expectations being set a bit too high before I began but after reading your thoughts, maybe not.

Tiamat Windstorm von Hirvi:

What is the current state of the exchequer, Tatiana? It occurs to me that it's been a while since I donated.

At some point back in 2017 the Exchequer threw up her hands in horror and stomped out of the treasury never to be seen again.  I believe I heard her mumbling something about "vanity project website" on the way out the door :)

All kidding aside, we haven't held a fundraiser since 2016 and I've recently revised the memberships so that once a supporter/sponsor always a supporter/sponsor.  Even though annual fundraisers are no more, donations are always gratefully accepted.  You can learn more about ways to do that at Donate.

Many thanks to everyone who has contributed their time and/or dollars to LHVW over the years!

What Are You Reading? v3

Book Lovers

I just finished the Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden and I was delighted by it.  If you have a soft spot for Russian fairy tales, including the infamous Baba Yaga, this trilogy is for you.

Arden skillfully weaves together real life with fantastical myths.  I started reading during the depths of an Ottawa winter which made it much too easy for me to relate to the characters living in a land where winter never seems to end.  I particularly enjoyed all the little details of everyday life where even the well-to-do are continually challenged and don't get me started about the high-born women being locked up in their towers ;)

There's historical fiction, magic, romance and a heroine who doesn't disappoint even though her choices are far from traditional.  I'll definitely be looking for more from this author.

Enjoy!

'White Queen' died of plague, claims letter found in National Archives

History

Elizabeth Woodville.jpg

An interesting article from The Guardian:

A 500-year-old letter discovered in the National Archives has revealed that the “White Queen” Elizabeth Woodville, the grandmother of Henry VIII, may have died of the plague.

Elizabeth, the wife of Edward IV, mother of Edward V and maternal grandmother of Henry VIII, died in 1492 after spending the last five years of her life in Bermondsey Abbey in London. No cause of death was recorded at the time, and there are no known contemporary accounts of her passing. However, while digging through transcripts and translations of Venetian documents relating to England, National Archives records specialist Euan Roger stumbled on a letter from the Venetian ambassador to London, written 19 years after her death.

The letter, dated July 1511, sees the ambassador, Andrea Badoer, state that “the Queen-Widow, mother of King Edward, has died of plague, and the King is disturbed”.

It also references To Be Shut Up’: New Evidence for the Development of Quarantine Regulations in Early-Tudor England

Elizabeth Woodville certainly lived in interesting times (as the Chinese curse goes) and I wish there was more biographical information about her and her daughter Elizabeth of York.  Recently, Philippa Gregory has introduced the "White Queen" to a modern audience with her fictional novels (and the mini-series spinoffs) but sadly these portrayals are dreck.

It's also sad to think that after surviving so much hardship her life was ended by plague.  Hard times indeed.

Game of Thrones ~ A Song of Ice and Fire

Tiamat Windstorm von Hirvi:

Resisting - resisting - Crave still hasn't posted Season 7 on its basic subscribers' server!

Ugh!  How rude of them!  IMHO Season 8 is epic.  Perhaps it's just because I've waited so long and now the end is in sight.  Ask me again what I think when it's over, especially if things don't go the way I want them to :)

RL:SL Size Ratios - What are Your Building Methods?

General Discussion

I think we've been building since around the same time, Tatiana - the days when 10x10 was a maximum size

Yes!  Those were the days!  I actually miss the enthusiasm I had back then for building.

Detail dimensions per prim, however, that's almost OCD; right next to alignment. I still get agitated when I see badly aligned buildings, or with shoddy measuring.

I'm right there with you, Abbondio, though I'm trying hard to be more relaxed about such things.  It's detrimental because I tend to get stuck in the weeds and so it takes me forever (or never) to complete things.

Apart from loving the mesh age for its higher detail at lower cost, it did end the joys of designing buildings for me.

I have a love/hate relationship with mesh myself.  Unfortunately I'm too impatient to learn how to mesh really well myself so Blender makes my head hurt.  I've done one totally mesh build and can't say that I enjoyed it all that much or that it looked better than any of my other builds.

Honestly I think prims work really well for walls, floors etc. so I have modified my building style to use both prims and mesh.  Now I have lovely detailed windows, doors. etc. (which I buy full perm) combined with prim surfaces that are easy to put together & texture.  It's put the joy back in building for me :)

My frustration with buy mesh objects include not being able to find exactly what I'm looking for and the fact that 90% of the AO's come as 1024x1024 textures.  I end up spending a considerable amount of time reducing texture sizes for optimization.

do any of you reset settings so people with lower powered PCs can see all the detail.

I've thought about it but I don't, Pamus  I'm going crazy enough with all my other concerns so I just can't add this to the list.

Tough, for slacing I may be too lazy but I don't use a calculated scale,

Thank goodness for that, Louis!  You're making me feel a whole lot better.  I really like the trick of merging smaller rooms to give more space.  I'm also liking the fact that we're all getting a bit smaller over the years.  Goodness knows what I started out as but I'm now just over 6'.  Still big, I know, but not huge like I started :)
