Panorama of Paris by the end of 18th Century

General Discussion

For those who finished reading the Memoirs of Madame Campan ( awww... you are fast readers!), so wisely advised by Melle De Plessis, may I suggestanother book, revealing the opposite side of this historical period?

Louis Sebastien Mercier wrote " Tableau de Paris" in 1781: it is the most extraordinary description of everyday life in those days in the French Capital City ! Mercier wanders in the streets of Paris and details what he sees, before adding some comments. EVERYTHING interests him: there is nothing to him as a trivial matter he would set aside. it is by far the best testimony on how the majority of the people lived inthis city, then the biggest in Europe.Besides, it is full of life, both as a depiction of characters and situations, and by its alert and straightforward writing.

Louis Sebastien Mercier ,was a prolific writer, within the fields of poetry, theater, novels, essays..,whose work is uneven. (He wrote a curious "The Year 2440, a dream if there ever was one "), where he described an imaginary societyin the future, ruled byphilosophical ideas, for instancethat people are granted a role according to their merit, and not to their hereditary privileges: this anticipation fiction was a brand new way, when this book was published, to criticize thecontemporary state of affairs in France.)

Unfortunately, Le Tableau de Paris is unavailable ina complete english version on the net ( and maybe elsewhere), but you can "sip" a translation of some extracts in the hereunder link.

“Memoirs of the Court of Marie Antoinette” by Madame Campan

General Discussion

I completely agree and this is recommended reading.Thank you for posting this, Madame, and dear Neighbor:)Except, maybe...I would advise the Ladies of Versailles not to read this book when Her Grace the Duchess de Noailles is around...She might resent it...I can't be sure the harsh words of Madame Campan regarding " Madame Etiquette" are undeserved, but they certainly are as far as Marie-Josette Laville is concerned:)))

Chateau Duvallier

Art & Architecture

Votre Grace, and Dear Duchess Skye,I rezzed and visited your Chateau Duvallier ( nice name, by the way) in the gardens of Varriale Designs, and ...awwwwwww !...It is your chef d'oeuvre, it seems!I like it inside out and upside down! apart from its beauty ( and the gardens!), from a practical point of view, I especially enjoyed the fact that there are so many windows, providing light, and nevertheless enough big walls to hang paintings on, or place some furniture, libraries, mirrors, aso...Too bad it's not for rent in the Duchy... but please tell me if it becomes available with a seaview...( though I wonder if a simple Baron could afford so many prims :))

Thank you Tatiana, for taking such great care of us!Of course, as I said before, I will contribute . I Just need to know how, where and when:)Unless... we might ask the Count of Cagliostro, who knows the secret to change mud into gold, to pay the whole Ning fee with some dust gathered in the Courts, after transforming it in an ounce of the precious and shiny yellow metal?Isn't it a GRAND Idea? Thanks again:)

GRAND OPENING FOR THE ROYAL COURTS FENCING GROUP!

General Discussion

Last Sunday was held the first meeting of the new Fencing Group in Royal Courts.

After the previous Concert, the delighful music of Mr Zeid's violin was still lingering in our minds, when we arrived, one by one, near the Languedoc Tavern fencing pistes.

Soon, we realized the success of this little meeting was beyond all expectations!

Not only most members of the Fencing Group came to compare their skills, not only did we have the pleasure of welcoming quite a few non-fencing residents whose curiosity was aroused, but also we were graced by the presence of our hosts, The Duke and Duchesses of Coeur, as well as honored by the attendance of many Imperial and Royal Highnesses and Nobles of High Ranks, from the Courts of Versailles, Venezia, Austria, Schleswig...Even one very good fencer from another part of SL showed up to challenge us, and her skills helped us to forgive her..hum..strange outfit:)

Pardon me if i cannot mention all names, as I intended to, but we were so many!..and I would dislike to forget anybody.

A lot of duels took place (and we would have had many more, if we had not been limited by the number of pistes available)...These fights were so fiercely funny, or so amusingly wild!

But the main satisfaction was the friendly atmosphere and joyous mingling of this social event, where different Courts, different social conditions (from Kaiserin to Peasant Girl) and both genders gathered in the excitment and fun of Fencing, this fixture of ART DE VIVRE in our era !

Wasn't it a good illustration of Enlightened Ideals?

We will do our best to tighten a bit the organization of our next meetings, without losing the loose informal and friendly feel that is part of their charm.

We thank all attendantsfor sharing these moments, and hope we will meet them again soon, on, or near the Pistes!

EN GARDE!

Early U.S. sim

General Discussion

I could not agree more to Duke Bedrich's statement, and my former comment was more a superficial trait d'esprit on the promising future of the US nation, than a reflect of my opinions. I tend to wonder, though, through my painful past experience of the Seven Years War, if any political institution -as good as it gets- will be able to win over the evil that lies deep in the heart of man, waiting for the proper circumstances to be revealed. But as the saying goes:" Il n'est pas necessaire d'esperer pour entreprendre, ni de reussir pour perseverer"and i will support the efforts of our good Duke to apply the ideal of Enlightenment to our daily life, in the Duchy and beyond.
